The Star

The Place is a project that encompasses design, art, innovation and retail in Raja Uda, Penang. The one stop contemporary lifestyle centre will provide bespoke shopping experience as well as cutting-edge art, curated design displays, concerts and dining. The Place was launched with an award winning light installation

The Star has landed in Raja Uda, Penang. Built from steel cables and over 500 meters of LED light, artist Jun Hao Ong’s latest site-specific installation, The Star, traverses a four-story cement building to illuminate the 2015 Urban Xchange public art festival. Steel rods fan out from the sculpture’s spherical center, piercing through the building’s foundation in an acute interconnected network of light. The sculpture looks like a colossal neon 3D spider web bursting from the third floor of a concrete structure.

Bamboo Square is a Garden framing the square in front of the Star installation. Dense bamboo forest creates an enchanting walk along the refreshing green scenery. For Chinese New Year, a contemporary art installation created by Tauras Stalnionis and Gabija Grusaite will be installed within the pathway of Bamboo Square. It is a modern interpretation of traditional Wishing Tree where people would leave a wish tied on a red ribbon. In Bamboo Square thousands of ribbons are tied to create a constantly moving and twisting sea of red that people are invited to experience, touch and get lost within.
